What is Carpal Tunnel?
Carpal tunnel syndrome, often just referred to as carpal tunnel, is one of the most common types of peripheral neuropathy, and is caused by extra pressure placed on the median nerve. The pressure on the nerve causes tingling or numbness in your fingers and hand, which may travel up from your wrist to your arm. Carpal tunnel may also cause weakness in your hand and make it more likely for you to drop objects. These symptoms start gradually and worsen over time to the point where the numbness or tingling becomes constant.
Women are more likely to experience carpal tunnel than men because the carpal tunnel area of the wrist is somewhat smaller in women.
Causes of Carpal Tunnel
- High blood pressure
- Rheumatoid arthritis
- Thyroid disorders
- Wrist fractures
- Repeated overextension of the wrist
- Factors in the workplace (i.e., vibrating tools, power tools, keyboard and mouse use, temperature)
- Poor posture
How Memphis Regenerative Healthcare Treats Carpal Tunnel
Our Memphis clinic treats carpal tunnel with two different types of regenerative therapies:
Studies have shown that platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy can help ease the pain caused by carpal tunnel. PRP therapy is a treatment that uses a patient’s own blood to enhance the body’s natural healing process. Blood is made up of several components: red blood cells, white blood cells, plasma, and platelets. Plasma is the liquid component of blood that transports blood cells and plasma throughout the body. Plasma is a particular kind of blood cell that contain proteins known as growth factors, which increase the speed of the body’s healing process.
When a patient’s blood is drawn for PRP therapy, it is spun through a centrifuge that separates these components. The healthcare provider will take the plasma containing the most platelets (platelet-rich plasma) and prepare it as an injection.
The healthcare provider injects the PRP into the patient’s wrist, and the high concentration of platelets will help heal the injured nerve.
Cell therapy uses a particular type of regenerative cell and injects it into the patient’s wrist. These special cells can easily change into the cells the body needs to repair itself heal itself. For carpal tunnel, this means these cells will change into a certain kind of nerve cell and will work to repair and heal the median nerve.
